The novel begins in media res, in the middle of things, then cuts abruptly at the end of the prologue. This scene is not situated in a larger time within the novel, and the beginning of the first chapter does not orient it, since the first chapter is also an in media res beginning, which will backtrack over some chapters through some flashbacks and backstory, till it returns to the present moment of Felix Phillips preparing to perform Prospero for the Fletcher Correctional Players production of the Tempest.
