What is the tone in Chapter 22 of Great Expectations?

Chapter Twenty-two revolves around Herbert's dinner with Pip, and his revelations of his own circumstances, as well as the story of Miss Havisham's past. Herbert's tone is that of a gentleman.... it holds no bitterness, and at times is quite sympathetic.
