One major conflict in the novel is Pip's continuing understanding of what it means to be a gentleman. His greatest desire is to be a gentleman, a man of means and social standing. Over the course of the novel, he learns that being a gentleman isn't about status.... it's about the man, and that he always had the perfect example right in from of his eyes..... Joe.
