The Setting in Great Expectations shapes each character that must live in it. Not only the Victorian Era in which it is set, but also Ms. Haversham's house. The interior of the home seems to 'expect' certain mannerisms and actions appropriate for the atmoshpere of genteel living. To that end, Pip and Estella both feel the need to live up to the 'expectations' of the home, the surroundings and their benefactoress.
