How did Leakey gauge Fossey's commitment to the project?

Leakey told Fossey that she must have her appendix removed prior to going to Africa. Fossey immediately complied. After the surgery was over, Leakey sent a note saying that the appendectomy was not necessary for the trip but that he told her it was so that he could gauge her commitment and resolve.
