Cindy, Fossey's dog, managed to create a relationship with the infant gorillas, probably against her will. Fossey noted that the infants were not put off by the dog, unusual considering that dogs were used by poachers. The infants loved to "play" with Cindy, often riding her, pinching, de-whiskering, smelled, suckled, and chased her around the camp. Fossey jokes that because Cindy had not seen another dog in two years, she may have been confused about her species.
