Alan Root helped Fossey establish a camp at Kabara in the Parc des Virungas. After the basic site was established, Fossey bought two chickens, Lucy and Dezi, so they could have fresh eggs. Fossey also attempted to establish a garden, but the elephants were intent on eating and/or destroying the plants. As a result, people must make the trip to town for fresh food.
