Fossey worked closely with Group 8, which was where she encountered a young male named Peanuts. Peanuts was the group's youngest male. One day Peanuts came forward to watch Fossey as she was pretending to eat foliage. After Peanuts got bored and stopped watching Fossey, she stopped eating and began to scratch her head. Peanuts mimicked her. Fossey decided to lie down in the foliage and stretched out her hand to Peanuts. Peanuts touched her in response before posturing and beating his chest.
