What are the motifs in Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian?

The novel's main motif is the dark.... which is a constant throughout the novel. Windows are darkened in fear of bombings, adventures take place at night, and William's mother make the dark a terrifying place when she locks William in the closet.
