Who is Felix Leiter from Goldfinger and what is their importance?

Felix Leiter is an American private investigator who has helped Bond in the past. While in the captivity of Goldfinger, Bond leaves a message behind on an airplane in the hopes that it will be delivered to Leiter. Leiter gets the message and foils Goldfinger's plot to rob Fort Knox.
