Who is Lewis Armistead from Gods and Generals and what is their importance?

Lewis Armistead is a Major in the United States Army at the beginning of the novel. He was also Winfield Scott Hancock's best friend. Armistead resigned his commission at the start of the war and joined the confederate army. He eventually became a brigadier general.
