Joseph E. Johnston was the first Lieutenant General of the Confederate Army. At the start of the war, he commanded the Confederate forces in Virginia, where he was described as overly cautious and secretive. The Union army under McClellan's command was able to force him to retreat over and over again. Johnston refused to send reports to Richmond, infuriating the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis. After Johnston was wounded, Davis used his injury as an excuse to replace him with Robert E. Lee.
