Why does the speaker attempt to cast off her expectations in A Pause of Thought?

The speaker is unable to cast off her expectations because she is human and quite naturally wants some sort of fulfillment; convinced that some thing has that fulfillment, and nothing else can provide it, she latches on to the hope of it.
