Ownership is a theme in the story. The whole Vermeer house seek to own and control different parts of it. Tanneke seeks to own the day to day wokings of the household while Cornelia seeks power over it. Catharina seeks ownership pearl earrings while Griet's struggles to own her sexuality. Vermeer claims ownership of Griet.
