Why does David associate heterosexuality with masculinity?

It's hard to say how David views it, only that he believed his early encounter with Joey was a threat to his masculinity..... a perceived barrier to attaining his masculinity. In these terms, we can infer that David equated masculinity with a heterosexual relationship.
