How was Mrs. Alving's husband an example of the way appearances can be deceiving in the play, Ghosts?

Though Mrs. Alving's husband was considered a hero and a civic leader, his life was in fact a sham. He was nothing more than a drunken womanizer and the success of the estate is due to Mrs. Alving's hard work and management skills.
