Chapter Five:

• Ghost does not let his mother see the shoes when she comes home, for fear that she will be angry at him.

• In the morning, he wakes up and still feels okay about having chopped up his shoes (although his sore legs are not feeling so okay).

• Ghost makes it to school without seeing Brandon Simmons, but when another student, Shamika, drops her pencil in class, and sees his shoes, her laughter makes Ghost’s blood turn to ice.

• Humiliated by his fellow students’ laughter, Ghost runs from the school.

• Ghost ends up at Everything Sports, where a sales girl named Tia helps him try on running shoes.

• Ghost cannot afford any of the shoes, but when Tia and the other employees are distracted, Ghost shoves the shoes in his backpack, and runs out of the store.

• He goes to Mr. Charles’ store, and helps Mr. Charles replenish the shelves.

• When Ghost makes a trip into the stock room, the door closes behind him, trapping him in the place where he and his mother had taken refuge three years ago, when Ghost’s father tried to shoot them.
