Why does Ghost end up cutting up his sneakers?

While Ghost was running on the track, his shoelace came untied and he tripped over it. This was humiliating—on top of his poverty, and all the things Brandon made fun of—so he vents his anger on his shoes, removing the superfluous padding with his mother’s scissors.
