Anita addresses a perpetual problem that women face in her society, one that her husband’s female relatives ignore. She poses the question: “If women don’t support other women, who will?” (99) What connects Malati and Amma to others is familial relations, specifically those determined by a shared blood lineage; however, in the process of devoting one’s loyalty first and foremost to family, one ignores people with whom similarities are also shared, such as gender. This reliance on family gives Amma an excuse for mistreating Suhasini and other women, which in effect allows her to perpetuate the problems experienced universally by those of her same gender.
