I need to answer this question from the book Germinal. Why does Catherine allow herself to be dominated by Chaval?

Catherine allows Chaval to dominate her because he has both threatened and violated her. He rapes her, beats her, and emotionally abuses her. Note, she does leave him and return to her family.
