in spartan society women were considered as equals but had different roles in society. in the home, they were responsible for all but the training and education of the young boys (trained+ educated by their father). in matters of the state, many spartan women (notably King Leonidas' wife) took part in elections, senate. the reason that they had such a huge role, was because of the fact that when the spartan men (most of them were trained to be soldiers) went off to war, the women had to run the city despite their absence.
