Who is Ponocrates from Gargantua and Pantagruel and what is their importance?

Ponocrates is hired by Grandgousier as Gargantua's tutor. He accompanies Gargantua to France, and later, returns to Utopia with him to defend their homeland against the attempted invasion of King Picrochole of Lerne.
