What is the main conflict in Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon by Jorge Amado?

The main conflict is the novel is the two very different sets of social beliefs deemed appropriate by Gabriela and Nacid. Gabriela has never been exposed to a world where women don't work.... where they worry about little else other than things and clothing. She loves Nacib, but she also loves her work and has no desire for things. Nacib, however, doesn't see things in the same way. He believes his wife should embrace social proprieties she's never even imagined, let alone wanted. Thus, these are the obstacles they must overcome.
