Why does Gabi wish she had darker skin in the novel, Gabi, a Girl in Pieces?

Gabi wishes that her skin were darker so people would not question her Mexican heritage. Because she is light-skinned, Gabi says that she has been told that she is not Mexican enough and that she does not look like a Mexican is supposed to look.
