How is the setting of New York City described in the beginning of Chapter 7? Why was Bechdel's family there?

Bechdel's father took the children to New York for the Bicentennial celebration in 1976. They stayed at the apartment of a friend in Greenwich Village, where the author describes witnessing openly gay culture for the first time at age 15.
