Who is Griffith Taylor from Fugitive Pieces and what is their importance?

Taylor is a scholar from Cambridge, who participated in Captain Scott's doomed expedition to the Arctic. He meets Athos while in Greece and invites him to teach in Toronto. Athos takes him up on the offer after the end of the war. Unfortunately, Taylor learns he has cancer soon after Athos and Jakob arrive, something that leads him to return home to Australia.
