Frederick Douglass' intended audience was white northerners. The Heroic Slave is said to stage the perfect message the critics of American slavery.

In the novella, Douglass restages the rhetorical performances of abolitionist lectures and describes main events through the use of a series of dramatic monologues and making special note in regard to the various of the responses of the audience to speakers words.
