The novel suggests that the creature cannot be accepted as human because he is a singular being, that is he looks so different from an average human being that he cannot be accepted as a part of a community. The creature deviate from appearance norms so much that seemingly kind people become hostile to him. People fear the unknown and the creature's appearance represents this.
