The writer lives in an alternate reality in which the kinds of things that appear in horror stories are everyday events. To him, monsters and curses are normal, and so they are very boring to write about. When he does write about them, he finds himself mocking them and not writing a very serious story. Since everything is so crazy in his world, the writer finds simple things like cars, washing machines, and making toast really interesting. They are the subjects of fantasy for him. Writing about them is a form of escapism for him. This is why he enjoys writing about Amelia making toast more than he does about her facing monsters.
