Most of the stories and poems in the collection are set in England, or in a magical 'fairytale land' in which fairytales and stories are true. Occasional stories are set in America. A "Study in Emerald" is set in an alternate past in Victorian London, in which the Old Ones, which are monsters from beyond the Earth, have taken over the world.
