The narrator imagines that he sees the gargoyle retreating back into his chest clutching strands of hair. It is implied that this is Becky's hair and that the gargoyle has either killed her or dragged her back into the narrator's chest with it. Becky is gone in the morning, and the narrator assumes that she left. However, perhaps his vision of the gargoyle was not a dream. There is a flower left where Becky had been, which suggests that she left it there, but this could be all that remains of her after the gargoyle was finished with her. The narrator asked the gargoyle to protect him from feeling anything ever again, and he was in danger of falling in love with Becky all over again. The gargoyle either killed Becky or forced her to leave so that the narrator would once again go back to feeling nothing.
