Harlequin pins his heart to Missy's door and enjoys the process of wooing her. However, Missy does not behave as other girls would. She is not scared by the heart, and does not burn it or throw it away. She seems to have a presence that somehow dominates Harlequin, causing him to give her too much information. She is quick and clever, and immediately accepts what is happening. She knows about Harlequin and the Commedia dell'arte, which means that she can begin to understand how to deal with the situation. She takes a chance and eats the heart, which gives her power over Harlequin. Now she can see him, and realizes straight away that she is stronger than him. She takes his mask, hat and wand, not giving him a chance to say no or defend himself. She then becomes Harlequin herself, leaving him as a mortal. Rather than accepting his advances or wanting to stop them, she decides that she wants to be Harlequin and take his power for herself. She refuses to be a passive lover or victim. Harlequin has finally met his match.
