The narrator drives across America, hoping to find some sign of Scarlet or hear anything about her. He asks people he comes across whether they have seen her, but most tell him to just keep searching. He travels from Las Vegas to Montana or Nebraska, then to Saint Louis. He eats in a cafe in the desert, and in Jacksonville he spreads out all his trinkets and considers them. He hopes to find clues in the things that he finds, but he does not have any luck. He has glitter in a bottle from Washington DC, so has clearly been there too. Next he goes to North Carolina, then to Baltimore where a man tells him that Scarlet is in Boston. He travels to Boston but she is not there. Finally, in LA he picks up a ringing pay phone and she is on the other end. She tells him that he is loved, but then puts down the phone. The narrator writes the word 'remember' on a postcard and continues to look for Scarlet.
