The detective in 'A Study in Emerald' is a very intelligent and observant man. He can figure out a lot of information from very small details, such as knowing that the narrator was at Afghanistan because he is tanned and has a shoulder injury. The detective is very logical, and solves cases by looking at the crime scene and logically following leads. He is a master of disguise, which he uses to gain information secretly. He is also a little eccentric, using the mantelpiece for target practice. He is perhaps also a little arrogant and too sure of his own superior intelligence, which leads to him being foiled in the end.
