Shadow is a very big, strong man, but he is not naturally violent. He is compassionate, and resents being pulled into the party guests' plans to pit him against the bald man. Instead of killing the bald man, he rescues him from the party and returns him to his mother. He recognizes that although the bald man is technically a monster, it is the ordinary humans at the party who are the real monsters. He feels a connection with other supernatural beings as he is half-god himself, particularly those of Norse origin because his father was Odin. This is why Jennie the Hulda is interested in him, and why he dreams of Vikings and Norse gods begging him to set them free. Shadow seems to be quite a sad, wistful man who is searching for something but has not found it yet. He prefers to mind his own business and treats others politely, but will not stand for being used by others. His heart seems to be in the right place, as he fights for what he believes to be right, rather than worrying about himself.
