Harlequin is a trickster who loves playing pranks on people. He causes mischief, but also helps people. He is not evil, but he is unpredictable. He is not an ordinary mortal man, and seems to be supernatural in some way. Others cannot see him unless he wants them to, he can do magic, take out his heart without dying, and speaks with a corpse. He seems to be obsessed with Missy, who he calls his Columbine. It is as though he is stuck in a play from the Commedia dell'arte, and sees other people as characters from the plays. He is obviously used to getting what he wants, and enjoys the chase. He is very confident that he will have Missy. However, as he begins to lose his power over her, he begins to lose his confidence. All his power comes from the fact that he is Harlequin and somehow exists outside of reality. When he is drawn into the real world he becomes like a normal human, and Missy starts to display his old characteristics. The character of Harlequin seems tied to the costume, rather than any individual person.
