The disease called Disease Maker's Croup that is described in the story 'Disease Maker's Croup' begins with headaches, stomach ache, trembling and, perhaps, a rash. These are the only physical symptoms of the disease. The second stage is completely made up of mental symptoms. The patient will begin to become fixated on diseases and their symptoms, and will become obsessed with who found those diseases and how, as well as how to cure them. This is the last stage at which the disease is still treatable. After this comes the third stage of the disease, in which the patient begins to experience trouble with both speech and thought processes. As the disease progresses, the patient will become confused and begin to talk nonsense, with occasional bursts of sense. The patient will also often repeat themselves. The disease can be diagnosed at this stage by the patient's tendency to make up false diseases. This is hard to diagnose, however, as the disease often affects the very people who would be most trusted to tell the truth about diseases. The person cataloging the disease also mentions that the sufferer will experience loss of sleep, vomiting, abnormalities of the tongue and other physical symptoms, but this is probably not the truth. This is the cataloger beginning to suffer from the disease themselves, and so making up fake symptoms.
