In these very short stories, the author explores the different kinds of vampires that are found in vampire fiction. In 'Judgment' he explains that vampires are symbols of sex, lust and death, and fear of those. They provide people with ways to explore and talk about these themes. In 'The World' he explores the idea that vampires are just like real people, only better. They are faster and stronger, and they never die. However, they are also cursed to live a kind of 'half life' that is not the same as actually being alive. They are cold and dead and their emotions become very confused. They hate having to drink blood, as shown in 'Temperance' and they wish they could go out in daylight, as shown in 'The Sun.'
