In Chapter 14, Sam, the guerrilla fighter, reveals that the surrounding pygmies would kill Forrest, Fritch, and Sue if they left. He suggest that they sacrifice Sue as a diplomatic gesture and, as a non-sequitur, that they help achieve a stable cotton industry.
