What does Karkov learn when he arrives at his apartment in the Hotel Gaylord in Madrid?

The apartment is crowded and several men in uniform are present. Karkov learns that the fascists have been fighting each other, dropping bombs on themselves, and Robert Jordan is in the thick of it.
