Why has Mrs. Stanton come to Little Valley?

Mrs. Stanton is on her way to Halifax to seek a chance to talk to the duke about her land. Although she owns her land, there is a man trying to take it away from her. So far, her letters and other correspondence with the government have been useless. She has spent all of her money on her attempt to get justice for herself.
