Why does Greta's mother agree to let her go out and explore the fog?

It appears that Greta's father may have had some of the same experiences that Greta has had with the fog. Greta hears her mother and father talking one night, then the next day Greta's mother allows her to go out. It is assumed that Greta's father convinced her mother to let Greta go out.
