Lingsi notes that she "marvels" (32) at all she sees on her ride, even the "scrubby, unkept brush on the dirt road" (32). As she goes on to explain everything at the Li's house is kept spotless and immaculate. Even stray leaves are quickly removed from the garden. For Lingsi this kind of perfection, where nothing can be disturbed, is a prison of sorts. Indeed, as she notes, she is the one responsible for keeping it immaculate, so that perfection and beauty come at the cost of her freedom.
