Roli is immediately nervous when he discovers they will be painting at his school. The narrator notes that "Roli glances uneasily at me and then shrinks into his seat again" (48). He tells his father, "You should have told us" (48). In addition, once they arrive at the school, Papi and Roli stand outside, sending Merci in to tell the administration they have arrived. This suggests Papi is trying to shield Roli. Finally, when the girls burst into the gym, Roli works hard to avoid them, trying to become invisible. The writer suggests that though Roli stands out at the school as a student, he does not fit in socially and that he is uncomfortable.
