After reading "Oranges," by Gary Soto, Monk has been asked by his English teacher, Mr. Preston, to write a memoir. He has chosen to write it in verse. Additionally, he asks the question, in the early part of the poem, whether a memoir must be absolute fact or can it have some fictional elements. This suggests to the reader that what he will be saying is likely to have some exaggeration.
