As the narrator becomes closer to Celeste, her old friends, all white, have trouble understanding how she can be friends with a Black girl. They express great prejudice, make stereotyped and hateful comments about Celeste and going so far as to tell the narrator that her mom would be mad if she knew the narrator had a Black friend.
