The two girls meet when they are only eight, and Celeste and her mother return to New York when they are 12. During their four years together, though, the girls seem to learn from each other. Celeste, for instance, teaches the narrator how to behave around her as a Black girl, not to always ask to touch her hair or her skin. The narrator, on the other hand, knows the names of all the trees in the area, which seems to impress Celeste. Celeste misses her father, and shares this pain, while the narrator shares her own pain of missing her mother. They seem to grow close, though, as suggested by the fact that they bury Celeste's pet rabbit, Joe, together in her backyard.
