The narrator's mother died when she was young, apparently of cancer. The narrator talks of what pain her mother was in, and how she and her father prayed and believed her mother might not actually die. In addition, the narrator tells of when she heard her mother cursing in front of the mirror and tried to copy her. Her father told her her mother was allowed to say such things because she was in pain. The narrator says, "I wanted to tell him I was in pain" (126).
