Though she leads a band of cutthroat pirates, Tianyi is a woman herself and has no wish to see other women abused. When one of the men suggests they might trade Bisi to other pirates, the narrator notes that she saw "Tianyi's eyes flash with pity" (36). As a liberated woman, Tianyi represents a path to liberation for other women in the story. Not only does she set Bisi free, but she allows the narrator to remain on the boat.
