The family itself is apparently Choctaw, and Uncle Kenneth's story seems to be based on Choctaw stories and legends. So, for instance, he talks about the Bohpoli, the "Choctaw little people" (106) and Naloosha Chitto, the big hair man, or Bigfoot, of Choctaw country. The story he tells takes place in Oklahoma, in Choctaw country, even though he is telling it in Pasadena, Texas. He even calls the narrator by a Choctaw name, Turtle Kid.
